Position: Picker Operator
Type: Full Time
Reports To: Operations Manager/Truck Push

Summary

The Picker Operator will be required to effectively operate a mechanical boom and cable equipment to lift and move materials, machines, or products in many directions.  The Picker Operator will be required to pick up, transport and unload oil field servicing or drilling equipment and other materials from and to various locations. This equipment is loaded and unloaded onto the trailer with the use of the truck’s mechanical boom.

All duties of the Picker Operator are to be performed according to B&R Eckel’s Transport’s operating procedures in order to maximize the safety of all personnel at the work site and to efficiently perform the task.

Job Duties

  • Move levers, depress foot pedals, and turn dials to operate cranes for lifting, moving, and placing loads.
  • Inspect and adjust crane mechanisms and lifting accessories in order to prevent malfunctions and damage.
  • Inspect cables for wear, and install or replace cables as needed.
  • Determine load weights and check them against lifting capacities in order to prevent overload.
  • Clean, lubricate, and maintain mechanisms such as cables, and pulleys making repairs as necessary.
  • Direct swampers engaged in placing blocking and out-rigging under cranes.
  • Utilize a variety of Chains, Loading Slings, Boomers/Cinches, Snatch Blocks, and Shackles to secure, haul and load according to safety and workplace requirements
  • Oversee cargo handling and secure loads, including equipment preparation, application of safe practices, compliance with applicable Acts and regulations
  • Perform trip inspections on equipment operated and load, ensuring safety and roadworthiness
  • Comply with applicable legislation including safe operation, carriage of goods, driver’s hours of service, occupational health and safety, transportation of dangerous goods, and weights and dimensions
  • Manoeuvre trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
  • Check vehicles before driving them to ensure that mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to the vehicles.
  • Check all load-related documentation to ensure that it is complete and accurate.
  • Exchange necessary information with Dispatch, supervisors, or other drivers.
  • Maintain logs of working hours and of vehicle service and repair status.
  • Record and maintain required documentation including driver logbook, bills of lading, etc.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, customers, and co-workers both verbally and in written form
  • Assist in and supervise loading and unloading of trucks.
  • Perform periodic inspections before, during, and after delivery to ensure that load is properly fastened down and is secure
  • Deliver  product and proper paperwork to customers in a courteous and timely manner
  • Ensure that any debris caused by the loading/unloading of truck is cleaned up
  • Provide feedback to supervision regarding customer problems, mechanical problems, or delivery problems
  • Maintain trucks overall service and perform required inspections
  • Complete all necessary paperwork at the end of the shift.  May include, but not limited to, daily logs, inspection logs, delivery receipts, vehicle inspection, hours of service, etc.
  • Train others when required

Competencies/Skills Required

  • Class 1 driver’s license
  • Air brake endorsement
  • Journeyman Certification (Heavy Boom Truck)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with ability to perform routine vehicle maintenance
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with strong oral and written communication abilities
  • Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques.

  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Map reading
  • Ability to read/react to road conditions
